DocReport Episode 1 is now online

I’ve been keeping this one rather close to my chest, but the DocNetwork now has a podcast.

It will essentially be a weekly recap of any articles written that week as well as any info that didn’t quite make it that far.

Hopefully it will be regularly recorded on a Thursday, but time permitting.

This weeks episode is about Facebook, Australian Customs, and a brief recap on Warhammer Ancient Battles V.2.0

Don’t you even think about it

Following the tragic stabbing death of a child in Queensland a few weeks ago, Facebook memorial groups have sprung up by the dozens and unfortunately, not everyone feels the need to show their respect on them.

Individuals, hiding behind the anonymity of the Internet, to say comments they wouldn’t otherwise have the fortitude to do so in public, has been around since the privatization of the internet some 30 years ago, this form of keyboard courage is not new, and will continue to exist, because of the method in which the internet transmits its information. Facebook is not the first time that this kind of ‘cyber-bullying’ has existed, its just the first time that it has entered public domain. This time of cowardly act has existed almost as long as communication has existed on the internet, where individuals act cruelly online, and all smiles and happiness in person.

However, if it where up to Independent Senator Nick Xenophan, and yes the Rudd Government, the Australian Internet Experience would be monitored, by way on an Online Ombudsman, because ya know it sounded like a good idea when they thought of it.
The problem with such an exercise is one that has highlighted the failures of the Mandatory Internet Filter is its enforcement; considering the notion that the Internet is an international experience, no one Sovereign nation has the right to enforce laws on another Sovereign nation, meaning that while Australian activities will be monitored and enforced, International Activities wont be.

So if anyone was so desiring to say spam tribute pages on Facebook with derogatory comments, or in some cases, Porn, as seems to be the reason why this thing is coming into effect… because the Federal Government has the spare time to be checking their Facebook Status in between running the Country. They simply need to hope onto a Proxy Server, VPN, or well any of the methods in place to circumvent the Mandatory Internet Filter, and get away with their plans without recourse, because once again, THIS WILL NOT WORK.

The only people this will catch are those too ignorant at covering their tracks, which will be people who while doing nothing illegal, have the misfortune of having opinions, or school children who simply didn’t like whoever the person the tribute page is made about. Though it doesn’t help that in a recent report, Legal experts have actually come out to say that these Tribute Groups actually harm, not help criminal convictions.

And the next news person that says that hackers have attacked these Facebook Groups, please be aware that it is NOT considered hacking if the integrity of the site has not been comprised. The Correct Technical term for posting a large quantity of questionable/illegal photos is called Porn-Spamming, and the act of posting content that may be deemed offensive is called Wallspamming. However that doesn’t mean that its spam if its just people having opinions of their own, yes, its nice and all to have these tributes, but NO ONE IS PERFECT, there are people that will always find fault in people, and especially if they have issue with the popularity the individual had in death.

Posting Challenge Entrant: Harley-Quinn

For reasons known only to those who entered the Posting challenge, only one person actually submitted something for the Posting challenge, and that was of course the DocNetwork’s Number 1 Fan, Anne-Marie, aka Harley-Quinn. There is a trend on the Internet at the moment that she felt she needed to address.

‘Yes I’m a Girl, No I wont be your friend’

If there is ever a reason for me to not want to be an online entity, like Harley-Quinn, its the fact that every morning I wake up to find my email inbox filled with at least 25 emails from Facebook, of these at least 10 will be new friend requests from older guys of an age bracket 6-20 years older then me, granted there are a number of girls in the mix, but its mostly guys. Now I don’t want to appear as a bigot, or a stuck up blonde chick, but more often than not, most of these will be from the Middle East, namely from Lebanon.

Now I want to go out on the record and say, that I have no problem with the Middle East, and I do know that as a whole they are great people, the thing I have issue with is that these guys feel that because I am a blonde, somewhat attractive girl, with a small Online following, that I immediately must be their friend, and that I must be attracted to them. On the other hand, it would seem that there are people online that believe that because I too exist partially online, and I have varied interests, that I am expected to be friends with every pervert I encounter. The problem is that the internet is a wild and wonderful place, and while I can look after myself, it is even getting on my nerves.

Unfortunately, no matter how many times I cancel these friends request, I seem to get two more to replace it. For every person I do add as a friend, and the only time I do so is because I actually know the person, I have to ignore at least nine people I don’t. Like most girls I know, I also have to semi-regularly perform ‘purges’ where I check to see that the people that I have added, are actually who they say they are, and are not one of the million fake accounts that exist online. This feat isn’t helped by any when most of these people that I ignore either don’t speak the same language I do, or they can’t get it through their own skulls to take the hint that I’m not interested.

Now, it seems that I am not the only girl with this problem, but I really wish they would stop, I mean the rest of the world, and especially Caucasian girls, are not online just for the seedy perverted side of society to try and chat up, and furthermore, just adding someone you met on an interest group, and commenting that they are sexy, or using only a string of words that don’t even form a sentence is not the right way to get them to add you.

Please stop, if you want to get to know me, then sure, but until then DON’T even try and add me

No I am not related to you.

I’ve recently been inundated by messages from associates of mine, asking me if a message they received from Facebook stating that I was related to them. Now I would like to point out that I am not related to most of those people, and the reason for that query is due to a piece of scamware that has popped up on Facebook.

Using the commonly used Relatives application as a front, a piece of scamware called Zuggio, or something similar, will automatically send all your friends a message stating that you are related to the original sender. However all this does is propagates the scam, as soon as you click on the link to figure out just what the hell Joe Bloggs thinks by adding you as a relative, it sends the same link to all your friends.

This article is not without its caveats, considering the fact that this is for lack of a better term, a harmless piece of scamware, it does point out a large security flaw in Facebook. If this application can exist, and spread like the proverbial virus throughout the site, this also means that more malicious applications, things that may steal identities or install viruses, may do so with impunity. How do I know that this situation exists? Because it happened to me.

Facebook, you’ve done so much in recent months to try and fix bugs and vulnerabilities, unfortunately you also don’t have someone vetting applications to make sure things like this don’t exist.

Sorry for the disappearing act, I have a website, and a costume that needs working on so I have put this thing on hiatus until such time as either of those has been completed, I have a few articles lined up and I will get getting them out ASAP.

Bushfires reach Facebook

I had hoped that the news from the Victorian Bushfires, would have dried up by now, as the mainstream news carriers, have stopped devoted entire broadcasts, to it, however, I had also expected this news to surface, though additional reports have surprised me.

As of Tuesday, the Deathtoll finally reached 200, after nearly four days at 181, with more bodies identified in the Kinglake region fires. The Kinglake Complex, which covers a vast section of Victoria’s central highlands, alone, counts for 139, of the 200 killed with authorities stating that it could take weeks before a final death toll is able to be counted.
This horrific revelation, that country towns of only 200+ are losing 40 people, it places the emotional burden onto the townspeople, who while the Rudd Government has stated that they will spend however much is required to rebuild, many locals have stated that they would not return.

According to official CFA reports, there are roughly 11 fires still burning in Victoria, though most of these are now outside of threat areas for residential areas, there are a number of smaller fires burning, but they are also under control, or contained.

While the public outpouring of support for the victims of the Victorian Bushfires has been overwhelming, not only has it been from Australia, but a number of International companies as well as not for profit, and fan based Organizations, including the 501st Legion, and its sister group; the Rebel Legion (the 501st and Rebel Legion collectively raised five thousand Dollars), and Leo Laporte’s TWiT Army, have donated considerable amounts to the millions raised in Australia.
On the same hand, the revulsion, condemnation and public attacks on one of the convicted arsonists, Brendan Sokaluk has been the polar opposite, after a quick search, more than 12 groups on the social networking site Facebook, have been created, dedicated to the death, torture, or otherwise physical harm on this man, the most popular of these is called “Brendan Sokaluk, the Victorian Bushfires Arsonist, must burn in hell,” which has more than 3500 members as of this morning.

While the DocNetwork as an online entity, as a source of unbiased news, does not and will not support any form of vigilante justice; we however, do understand, and sympathise with those demanding justice of a man who has been charged for allegedly starting a fire that has killed 21 people and destroyed 39000 acres of property. We however, draw the line on personal attacks on members of Mr Sokaluk’s family, or past or present relations. It is not their fault they are related to this monster.

If the masses wish to vent their anger and frustration, please make sure that you are focusing it in the right direction, all Brendan Sokaluk’s family has done, was birthed and raised this miscreant, and his former girlfriend do was fall in love with him. They have not started any fires. Though we are relieved that the mob is turning to the Internet to let of their frustrations, instead of resorting to revenge attacks against this vile excuse of a human being.

The DocNetwork will continue following this story, and will update you whenever new information develops. No doubt there will be additional commentary about this.
