Windows 7… where?

Posted by Doc Winters on January 10, 2009

Hey folks, today’s the day that the Public Beta of Windows 7, is supposed to be released to the masses…well it’s supposed to be. According to the Windows Official Blog,

Due to the response in the Beta, that the Servers have been overwhelmed by the interest in the public Beta, we will keep you advised when we incorporate new servers into this process. We have been excited at your excitement in this process.

Translation: “Considering how bad Vista was perceived, we weren’t expecting the entire TWiT Army to want to download the Beta, plus the rest of the world, so you crashed our servers. We’ll get onto fixing it after we stop running around screaming.”

Throughout the day, it’s been a hit/miss scenario in getting the product keys to be able to use the Beta. so much so that the technology writer on the Darkside (i.e. me) has given up trying into get the Beta, though that might be more part in parcel to the fact that Telstra would have a coronary when they realized that I am downloading a 3.5gig OS Beta.
I had hoped to have a review of Windows 7 tonight so you could either read my praise of the new OS, or see me complain how nothing works. Considering what I have read and heard elsewhere from people who have been using Windows 7 since the PDC, and those that have been lucky enough to get into the Beta, I would be more likely to see the former than the latter.

If however I am lucky and I get into the Beta by hook or crook, then I will have my review of it, if not then I’ll review it when it comes out some time later this year. All in all, I am not particularly fussed about not getting the Beta right away.

While we are talking about Windows, I recall a comment made by Windows Weekly luminary Paul Thurrott, about his desire to live a Microsoft only world, but couldn’t due to the fact that the competition offered something better.
While mulling over this statement, I discovered that I in fact, already lived this world that he spoke so fondly of, in fact, the only device I use regularly that isn’t Microsoft, is my Smartphone, being a Nokia N95, though that is because none of the carriers in Australia sell Windows Mobile based devices, and the increased difficulty in getting open market Windows Devices.

I want to apologies to my audience about my disappearance over the last three days, as I had been working on an article commenting about the lack of innovation in the current tech market, but I had to abandon it after it started becoming an unsalvageable attack on certain companies. Also during this time, I had been entertaining my grandmother, who I rarely get to see due to the geographical location compared to where I live.

As for the other staff writers of the Darkside, they will start reporting in as soon as I get around to going to their houses and setting up Live Writer to allow them to contribute. Apparently these tools have a higher learning curve than I had thought.

Also if anyone was wondering, my Nerf Vulcan is on its way, so some time in the next few days I should be getting a call from my mother telling me that a large box has arrived for me. That night there will be an unboxing and review of the Vulcan

If anyone has any topics they would like to see me cover, please feel free to contact me.
